Microsoft Photostory 3

Microsoft Photostory 3 provides a great software to create any kind of photo slide show in which you can sync up with music and transitions.  One nice way art teachers can use this software is to create slideshows of your students art work to play at parent teacher conferences, or as an end of the year recap of all the great projects your artists have done.  Check out my tutorial.

Besides the websites excellent science and art connections, there is an excellent section called “Van Gogh’s Letters” inside you can select from several key words that will send you directly to quotes from Van Gogh’s writing that exemplify the key word you selected.  Amazing.

Rural Graffiti

Two Norwegian artists have taken up graffiti on old rural buildings.  They go by the names Dolk and Pøbel.

Graffiti 5 Points NY

I love to start the year off with some excitement, one way I’ve done this is with Graffiti art.  It many things in one, lettering, shape and proportion, value, and unlimited creativity all wrapped in one.  Also starting the year with a graffiti based lesson, makes for a great opportunity to pre-assess all your kids skills.  I do this even in the elementary with 5th grade.  Along with a discussion on what is private and public property- where is graffiti legal and illegal.  So far no problems.  A great source of graffiti art that’s legal is a place called 5 points in New York.  Its a an artist owned building for the sole purpose of legal graffiti art.  This building is absolutely covered from head to toe.  Since this building is ever-changing, the best way to check it out is to Google images on 5 points.  Warning to educators– before you get all power point happy with copy/pasting these images really make sure you check for profanity or nudity.  Sometimes at first glance you may not see it.
